Definitions

1. Flow
The volume of slurry to be transported in a unit time.
2. Weight Concentration
The solids present in a two-phase mixture expressed as a percentage of the weight of the total mixture.
3. Volume Concentration
The solids present in a two-phase mixture expressed as a percentage of the volume of the total mixture.
4. Density
The mass of a fluid as expressed in its mass per unit volume (kg/m³)
5. Efficiency
The ratio of energy delivered by the pump to the energy supplied to the pump shaft.
6. NPSH
Net positive suction head. The total suction head in absolute units at the impeller centreline less the absolute vapour pressure of the liquid.
7. Velocity
Rate of flow in a given direction
8. Viscosity
Fluids offer resistance to flow. Viscosity is the property of a fluid to resist the relative displacement of adjoining layers. This resistance to flow is due to internal friction and molecular attraction between particles which, when induced to flow, causes apparent shear resistance between adjacent layers.
Dynamic viscosity is the ratio between shearing stress and the rate of shearing strain (Velocity Gradient)
